Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 for Alonso and Massa

Design
Visually, makes her a lot of special Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. The typical Jeep grille with seven air vents in matt black lacquered red inserts and displays. A black vertical stripes with a white line extends from the front to the rear bumper. For more details, such as the held in matte black two-piece glass roof, exterior mirror housings made of carbon fiber and a black bar at the rear lights painted with red Jeep SRT8 logo make both to individual productions. As a tribute to the Formula 1 race car, there is a F150 Italian flag painted on the underside of the rear spoiler. The body is lower by 3.8 inches, and both vehicles are on specially forged, black-painted 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Interior
Suitable for the occasion wearing the Ferrari red leather interior for use in the sport seats, door trim, center armrest and instrument panel. Red stitching to make the shift paddles provided SRT8 steering wheel an eyecatcher. The yellow indicator in the instrument will again remind us of the sports cars from Maranello.
Engine and performance
As Formula 1 drivers in real life like the move quickly, must provide their private cars, of course, plenty of power. And heres the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 has to offer: Sparked the "utility vehicle" from the new 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine with 468 hp and a torque of 624 Newton meters. This engine does not fire the wheel drive vehicle in 4.8 seconds from zero to 96.6 km / h storm (60 mph). The discipline of 0 - 161 - 0 km / h is done by a Grand Cherokee SRT8 in the mid 16 seconds range, it covers the quarter mile from the state in the mid 13 seconds range, a top speed of 257 km / h and comes trozt the high weight of 96.6 km / h after 35.4 meters to a halt.
The fuel consumption seems indeed likely to play a minor role, but is nevertheless worth mentioning that the new V8 has a consumption-reducing cylinder deactivation, which separates four of the eight combustion chambers of the fuel supply when full V8 power is not needed.

Green Innovation Award Cheers For Toyota Prius

At last the "tree", planted by the toyota motors to shift towards the "greener side" is now bearing fruits. Australia recognizes its efforts and initiatives to make the motor vehicles more eco-friendly. The latest prius, launched in early July, won a prestigious "Green Innovation Award" and "Peoples Choice Award".
The judges reckoned the Toyota Prius as innovative and "practical family car" continued to set benchmark for fuel efficient motoring. Furthermore they said that "Toyota was instrumental in hybrid techonoligy and making it popular to the point where most major car makers are now following suit".
"Hybrid have had many critics and, while the technology is not perfect it makes a sizeable step towards more effecient motoring. Something thats becoming more relevant everyday. Prius has gone from something of a science experiment to a practical, innovative family car."
The award was announced by the Fairfax Drive national Motoring editor Toby Hagon, while it was judged by nine of the top most experienced motoring journalists. The "Peoples Choice Award" was awarded as a general poll result, decided by the readers of the Fairfax Drive Online.
Toyota Australias manager, Vic Johnston sure looked contented and stated that the iconic prius has now mainstream acceptance and the new generation prius has re-inventedthe transition of passenger carsfrom conventional power to hybrid delivery.
"Its success and acceptance is based on a greater understanding of the compelling need to save fuel and to reduce the environmental foot print of motoring", He added further.
This is not the only success that the Toyota Prius has witnessed so far. Infact prius has won its first major international award, recognized as the "Japenese Car Of The Year."
According to Japan Automobile Dealers Associations claim, third generation prius has been Japans best selling car grabbing the 10.8% share of all the motor vehicle sales in September all over Japan.
Some of its basic features has been enhanced resulting in improved fuel effeciency of about 11.3% which means that it can cover a distance of 100Km in just 3.9 litres. Further improved features include 1.8-litre petrol engine and an electric motor of 100KW.
Amazingly carbon emission of the prius is as low as 89g per kilometer which is the lowest as compared to any vehicle in Australia so far and until now Toyota has been able to sell 1.5 million units the prius world wide out of which 14000 have been utilized in Australia alone.

Audi R8 e tron Sets Record for Electric Cars
The Audi R8 e-tron has been established on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring for the fastest production cars with electric drive. Race driver Markus Winkelhock drove the purely electric-powered high-performance sports car in 8:09,099 minutes on the challenging 20.8 km course. "The R8 e-tron has its potential on the toughest circuit in the world has impressively demonstrated," says Michael Dick, Audi Board Member for Technical Development. "The record run has confirmed to us that we are on the right track. Electric mobility means that we never use, but always emotional, sportiness and driving pleasure."

How impressive is the reaching time of 8:09,099 minutes, the comparison with the fastest lap so far stalled in production vehicles. The best value of 7:11,57 minutes was achieved with a Gumpert Apollo Sport, by a 515 kW (700 hp) Audi motor is driven.
The Audi R8 E-tron, which generated Markus Winkelhock on the Nordschleife record drive is in all details the standard model, the end of the year comes on the market. His two electric motors give off together 280 kW power and 820 Nm of torque and propel him in 4.6 seconds from zero to 100 km / h The top speed is actually limited to 200 km / h, but for the record lap was 250 km / h released.
To the relevance of the R8 e-tron series and to underline the performance of its drive technology, Audi has set up beside the best time on the Nordschleife, another record. Right after Winkelhock drove with a second to 200 km / h limited two fast laps R8 e-tron at a time. Both are 8:30,873 and 8:26,096 minutes to well below the 9-minute mark.
Michael Dick moved to the record-breaking run at the Nurburgring proud of the results: "Within a few weeks we have made major challenges and it showed that we are with all of our drive concepts at the top." In May, the Ingolstadt-based Audi R8 LMS with the ultra-have won by ten-cylinder engine, the 24-hour race at the Nurburgring. In mid-June there was the triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro - the first overall victory for a hybrid vehicle in the toughest race in the world. Now came the R8 e-trons record on the Nordschleife.

Lincoln MKZ 2013 There is Something For Everyone
This is the last Motor Show in Detroit we saw this big sedan for the first time. And the production model in 2013 that we see today is almost identical to the concept that the luxury division of Ford introduced last January. According to the director of Lincoln Design, we wanted to combine elegance and simplicity when we designed the Lincoln MKZ 2013. It is luxurious but wanted different luxury cars that we know in America. We also wanted the relatively affordable.
Mechanical of Lincoln MKZ 2013
Three versions of the MKZ are available on the North American market: EcoBoost (2WD and 4WD) V6 (2WD and 4WD) and hybrid. The EcoBoost model is powered by a turbocharged 2-liter dual overhead cam head that develops 240 horsepower and torque of 270 lb-ft. It comes standard with traction and offers all-wheel drive as an option. The gearbox is a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters behind the wheel.
Finally, the Lincoln MKZ 2013Â is also offered in hybrid. This engine consists of a 4-cylinder engine 2 liter Atkinson-cycle whose power reaches 141 horsepower and an electric motor. The combined power of both engines amounted to 188 horses. In this case, however, we are dealing with a gearbox continuously variable.
Body and interior of Lincoln MKZ 2013
Outside, Lincoln revised aerodynamics of its Lincoln MKZ 2013Â to make it more effective. While it retains the distinctive elements of the brand, one feels more modern than the model it replaces. The headlights now use LEDs and rotate the side where the driver turns to improve night visibility. The rear lights are also benefiting from LEDs.
The interior of the car is quite inviting due to its ergonomics, small details and quality materials found there. The dashboard has been completely revised and is in harmony with the exterior design of the car. The watchword in the cockpit, it is technology. Was replaced by a speed selector set of five buttons. Regarding equipment, there is no lack of anything really. The Lincoln MKZ 2013Â is the only sedan in its class to offer inflatable seat belts in the rear.
The Lincoln MKZ 2013Â offers a driving experience for the price we demand. And if you want both luxury and fuel economy of a compact, the Lincoln MKZ 2013Â is for you. The new Lincoln MKZ 2013Â will be marketed at the end of the year 2012 and is the first of four vehicles that the manufacturer intends to market in the coming years.

Ford Taking Orders for Hot Focus ST
Ask the average North American car guy what comes to mind about what high performance cars Ford builds, the Mustang and Taurus SHO will come to mind, and hell stop there. Soon, the Ford Focus ST will be joining that group. In Europe, Ford has been building (and racing) performance versions of their small, mainstream four cylinder cars for decades. Finally, North America gets a taste of what weve been missing all this time.
One glance at the Focus ST and you immediately know this is no ordinary grocery getter. Apart from the aggressive aero, standard 18s, lowered ride height, beefier brakes and sport suspension, the Focus ST has the grunt to match the look. Motivation comes in the form of a 2.0L EcoBoost four, cranking out 252hp and 270 lb. ft. of torque. A six-speed manual is the only transmission available, and I am happy about that. Posers, stay home. If a car like the Focus ST appeals to you, but you could not be bothered to learn how to work three pedals and a gearshift together, you dont deserve to get to play.
The 2013 Ford Focus ST has a starting price of $23,700USD, plus $795 destination. The ST will be available only as a five-door hatchback. If you feel like building your own Focus ST, click here for the link to Fords site. Even going with the priciest option package with goodies like HD Radio, Recaro seats with leather, sunroof and navigation, the ST still comes in under $30 grand. To put that into perspective, the VW Golf R four door with similar power and features will run you over $6,000 extra.
Ford is now taking orders for the Focus ST. Its been a long, long wait to see such a car from Ford here in North America. To reward us for our patience, the first 1,000 people to place an order will be rewarded with a GoPro HD Hero2 Motorsports Edition camera pack. That shows Ford understands the buyer of the Focus ST completely-the fact that high quality photography is a passion for many here at The Garage is living proof. Stay tuned for more Focus ST news and updates.

Smart for us Concept 2012

- Smart for-us Concept, 2012
America is the land of great automotive freedom, great landscapes, a love of outdoor activities and large pickups for thoroughly enjoying the "American dream". Now smart is countering the "bigger is better" mentality with a surprising new vehicle: the smart for-us Concept is small, agile and does not need any petrol thanks to its electric drive. The model, which builds on the smart forspeed and smart forvision concepts presented in 2011, celebrates its world premiere at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. With its exterior dimensions (length/width/height: 3547/1506/1701 mm) it could almost go unnoticed on the loading area of a typical pickup, and it also anything but ordinary under the body.
The smart is turning the automotive world upside down once again and challenging ideas about what an urban pickup should look like. In a tongue-in-cheek manner the for-us signals that this is the right car for the young and young-at-heart with active lives who attach importance to low emissions and taking up minimum road space. The smart for-us translates the practical loading concept of a pickup to the reality of 21st century urban traffic for the first time. Thanks to the state-of-the-art electric drive with a 55 kW magneto-electric motor the zero-emission smart for-us is agile and lively to drive.
Like car2go, the globally successful car sharing initiative from smart for more flexibility in city traffic, the smart for-us is a mobility concept. Just like the smart fortwo, which has enjoyed success around the world, it has ample room for two people, but it also has space behind for two smart ebikes, which can charge their batteries on the cargo area during the journey. From a trip into town to an outing to nearby nature reserve - the smart for-us safely transports two people and two electric bikes without producing any emissions. The ebikes on the cargo area become range extenders in two respects: thanks to the docking station on the cargo area of the smart for-us their batteries are always charged, and smart for-us drivers can also reach destinations that are out of bounds for cars - for example traffic-calmed zones in the city or isolated park trails.
The exterior: sassy and robust with extremely short overhangs
Even the first glance at the study shows that this smart can do more - yet it remains true to itself. It has a surprising, sassy and robust appearance - but thanks to the visible tridion safety cell and a number of other features it is typically smart. Furthermore, both the interior and the exterior feature a number of charming details which show that the smart designers devoted themselves to the project with the joie de vivre typical of the brand.
Compared with the series-produced fortwo the smart for-us makes a powerful statement and its appearance plays with the martial image of conventional mega-pickups. Nevertheless, it greets the viewer with a friendly yet assertive face. It features convex and sensuously shaped body surfaces. The large brand emblem is proudly sported on the grille, and the front has a pronounced three-dimensional design with an underride guard finishing off the lower part of the front end.
The for-us is raised by 50 millimetres as against the standard smart, and demonstrates that it is perfectly suited to off-road driving, for example to reach mountain bike terrain. In a later development stage the electric drive could be extended in the direction of a 4x4 with two front wheel hub motors.
The longer wheelbase (2480 mm/plus 613 mm) and the track that has been widened by 50 mm on each side also emphasise the robust look of the study. At the same time the extremely short overhangs at the front and rear make it exceedingly compact and provoke supporters of conventional pickups: small is beautiful - even as a pickup.
The smart for-us rolls on Michelin off-road tyres measuring 235/55 R 18. The wing nuts of the central mounts of the three-spoke wheels are an attractive detail: they fold out and then serve as a lever to release the wheel nuts.
The design of the rhombic front and tail lights is very striking and is reminiscent of the design of the smart forvision, which caused a stir at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The outer rings illuminate the indicators and daytime running lamps with a large number of rod-shaped LEDs. The lamps seem to push outwards like arrows - like drops on the cockpit window of an aeroplane as it takes off. The tail lights can even be opened and provide stowage space, for example for the charging cable or drinks cans for sporty bikers.
The tailboard at the rear of the smart for-us is electrically driven. Remote control or touching the integrated touchpad retracts the cargo floor including tailboard by 280 mm, and the tailgate then slides down in a parallel position. The cargo on the 900 mm cargo area is then extremely easy to access.
The high-gloss white metallic paintwork of the smart for-us with the tridion cell in a grey textured finish also builds a bridge to the smart forspeed presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, and to the smart ebike. On the other hand, the honeycomb structure of the air inlets takes up an aspect of the smart forvision, which attracted lots of attention at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The subtle colour accents in a warm yellow establish a further visual link to the interior.
The interior: stylish, uncomplicated and highly functional
Sleek, taut surfaces in mother-of-pearl white combined with precisely designed technical functional elements in brushed aluminium - the interior is characterised by contrasts. The white metallised leather establishes a link to the instrument panel, which in turn is related to the body. The headrests featuring metallic leather are a reference to the matt-finish textured paint of the tridion safety cell and - in line with the clean design - they largely dispense with seams. Yellow adds highlights to the interior, for example on the seat belts and seat covers. Leather door trim provides a further high-quality contrast.
Like in the smart forvision, the whole cockpit boasts aerodynamic styling for interior ventilation. The control and display elements are oriented to the driver. Just as the cockpit module divides the instrument panel, the two-spoke steering wheel is open at the top. In place of a conventional rear-view mirror the smart for-us features a smartphone accommodated in a holder on top of the instrument panel support. The driver can see what is happening on the road behind with the help of an integrated video camera.
Stylish, uncomplicated, highly functional and easy to individualise - the two seats in the concept car are typically smart. The seat shells, which are open in the middle, are covered with a soft fabric throw giving them a hammock-like seating feel. Practical: when the seat cover on the passenger side is removed long items can be loaded through the seat of the smart for-us.
The study has yellow seat covers with a deep embossed silver hexagon pattern indicating a progression and thus emphasising the vehicles dynamism. As the covers can be removed in no time at all, simple individualisation with other throws is conceivable. The seats could even be used as avant-garde seating at home or when spontaneous seating is needed outdoors.
The cargo space has two slits for the front wheels of the smart ebikes. A special docking station in the middle enables the ebikes to be charged whilst being transported on the smart for-us. And bicycle tools or other items can be accommodated in the stowage compartments on the right and left of the load space.
Electric drive: zero-local-emission driving fun
The electric drive of the smart for-us is based on the innovative drive concept of the smart fortwo electric drive, which will be launched from the spring of 2012.
Thanks to the 55 kW magneto-electric motor the smart for-us is agile and lively to drive. With 130 Newton metres of torque it boasts powerful, lag-free acceleration and it can overtake other vehicles with the greatest of ease. The maximum speed exceeds 120 km/h.
The lithium-ion battery has capacity of 17.6 kWh. When completely empty it takes a maximum of eight hours to fully charge the battery at a household socket or charging station on the electricity systems of most countries i.e. overnight.
smart ebike: urban electric mobility on two wheels
There are two smart ebikes on board the smart for-us - perfect for local-emission-free city driving. The colour of the two ebikes, which are based on the production bike to be launched by smart in the spring of 2012, has been matched to the smart for-us. Some of the components, for example the battery housing, therefore come in the highlight colour yellow.
With an unconventional design in line with the style of the brand, functions appropriate for city use and high technology standards that are demonstrated by the extremely efficient and high-performance drive package among other features, the smart ebike has an exceptional position.
High-quality components guarantee dynamic, safe and fun cycling. For example, MT4 disc brakes from Magura are fitted at the front and rear. The smart ebike also features state-of-the-art infotainment: a USB interface is a standard feature and enables various mobile end devices to be connected.
smarts high technological standards are manifested in the extremely efficient and high-performance drive package. As a "pedelec" (Pedal Electric Cycle) the smart ebike is strictly speaking a hybrid: the electric motor - a maintenance-free and brushless rear-wheel hub motor from BionX - switches on as soon as the rider starts pedalling as with a normal bicycle. Muscle power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a durable and quiet belt drive. An integrated three-speed gear hub provides for simple gear changing.
The strengths of the ebike include its agile performance: the rider of the smart ebike decides how much power he wants the 250 watt electric motor to deliver to support his muscle power by pressing a button on the handlebar. There is a choice of four power levels with the fourth and highest level providing maximum pushing power. Depending on the power level selected and the manner of cycling a battery charge can last for more than 100 kilometres.

Try Iridium Spark Plugs For The Next Spark Plug Replacement
Advantages Of Having Iridium Spark Plugs.
Before acquainting you about the advantages of iridium spark plugs, I want to make one thing clear. Spark plugs dont enhance the efficiency of the car beyond its limits but instead they make it more efficient according to the cars own potential. So clear your mind from any misconceptions that its only the spark plugs that will make your crawling ride in to a super fast car.
Now coming to the advantages of iridium spark plugs, they sure are durable and strong enough as compared to other conventional platinum tipped, spark plugs. Durability of iridium spark plugs can be compared as it has a life of almost 60, 000 miles where as the conventional will give you 20,000 to 40,000 miles. Of course because of the good quality of the element, the quality of spark is improved and gives a much better spark hence improving fuel efficiency.
The best thing about the iridium spark plug is that it wears off rather slowly as compared to platinum spark plugs. The reason is of course, iridium is much more durable than its "colleague" platinum. Besides this, the melting point of iridium is much more higher than platinum. The melting point of iridium is 4450 F where as that of platinum is almost 3216 F. Thats a huge difference. Furthermore, iridium is 8 times more rigid than platinum where it can endure a pressure of 160 Kpsi as compared to platinum which can stand a pressure of not more than 20 Kpsi. Because of these qualities, the iridium spark plugs wear off much slowly as compared to those conventional spark plugs so you dont have a headache of replacing your spark plugs after some years.
Learning above attributes of iridium I bet you would go for high quality iridium spark plugs the very next time you perform your cars spark plug replacement.

Shutter Speed They all hoped for better things
The usual squabbling between the FIA and FOCA was noticeably absent at the start of the 1982 season. Alan Jones had become disenchanted with the almost suspension-less cars and had gone home to Australia. The rumour mill was rampant with as many as three former World Champions to appear on the grid for the season. Jackie Stewart, James Hunt and Niki Lauda were all reported to have been offered large sums of cash to put on a helmet again. Only Lauda appeared at McLaren with John Watson as his backup.
Carlos Reutemann had intended to retire but reconsidered when Jones left the team. Keke Rosburg was his second at Williams. Mario left Alfa-Romeo to return to America and IndyCar racing. Gilles and Didier remained with Ferrari. Piquet teamed with Recardo Patrese at Brabham while Prost and Arnoux returned to Renault. Mansell and de Angelis took up the cores with Lotus and March retained Jochen Mass alongside newcomer Raul Boesel.
Gilles thought 1982 was going to be his year. Ferrari would win the constructors championship, but things would be very different in the drivers race.
South Africa started the season and a rift over the new drivers super license which the drivers felt they could be traded like cattle at the whim of the team owners. Once this got straightened out the race got underway. Gilles had qualified third behind Arnoux and Piquet. Didier was qualified sixth. Both Ferrari would drop out of the race with Gilles blowing a turbo and Didier having a misfire and finishing in eighteenth.
In Brazil Gilles started in second behind Prost. Didier started in eighth. On the thirteenth lap Piquet took on Gilles for the lead and Gilles got on the grass on the left side of the track and promptly slid across the circuit in front of the pack and buried the car in the catch-fence. Pironi finished sixth a lap down.
At Long Beach Gilles qualified seventh behind the big surprise of qualifying, Andrea de Cesaris in the Alfa-Romeo. Lauda showed he had not lost the touch by sitting on the front row in his McLaren.
Everyone was concerned about how de Cesaris would handle leading, but he led them into the first corner and continued to lead until they came upon back-markers when old King Rat slipped past as de Cesaris hesitated. Gilles duelled all race long with Keke. The second place changed hands numerous times with Keke holding it at the finish. Ken Tyrrell lodged a complaint about the rear-wing configuration on Gilles Ferrari.
The Ferrari engineers had decided to show FOCA how easy it was to interpret the rules. They mounted two wings end-to-end with a slight overlap to the rear of Gilles car. They proved the point and Gilles was promptly disqualified and his points taken away. Tough way to make a point considering he had just put his ass on the line and not the guy making such a decision.
The Grand Prix family returned to Europe and to Imola and one of the most controversial races in memory. There was more political squabbling that saw the starting grid with only Ferrari, Renault, Alfa-Romeo, Tyrrell, Osella, Toleman and the ATS team appearing. The other FOCA teams had decided to boycott the race over disqualifications of Piquet and Rosburg in Brazil. Both drivers had been disqualified for having ballast tanks that were full at weigh-in scrutineering, dumped during the race and re-filled before post race inspection.
During practice and qualifying both Renaults thwarted all attempts of the Ferrari team to oust them from the front row. Prost was almost a second faster than Gilles in third and well over two seconds better than Didier in fourth.
Arnoux took the lead at the start with Prost in second, but Gilles pulled a late-braking manoeuvre and took second heading into Tosa, the same corner that Gilles had had the great shunt in 1981. Pironi slipped past Prost into third before the end of the lap. By the seventh lap Prost had had enough and pulled into the pits with engine problems.
At one point Arnoux had as much as a four-second lead on Gilles who began to reel the Renault in. Gilles tried to get past on lap 22, but was blocked my Arnoux. Gilles had to lift off to prevent a shunt which allowed Didier to slip into second. Pironi could not make any headway on the fleeing Renault. Gilles got by him and took off after the leader. He took the Renault as they climbed the hill after Tosa. The Italian fans went through-the-roof, but it was all for naught as Arnoux retook the lead on the 31st lap. It appeared another wheel-banger like Dijon was about to begin. Pironi then retook second and held it for several laps before Gilles took second from him yet again and charged after Arnoux. With all this fighting for the lead at a high rates of speed, the fuel level on the two Ferrari was getting marginal.
The wild show started to turn in Ferraris favour when small puffs of smoke began to appear behind the Renault. Both Gilles and Pironi were having visual problems with the smoke and oil coming from the expiring car in the lead. Suddenly the rear of the Renault was a ball of flame! The turbo was on fire! Arnouz pulled to the side of the track and made a hasty exit from the cockpit. The two Ferrari were now one-two with Gilles in the lead. The Ferrari pit hung out a Slow signal and Gilles realized what they needed to do to make it to the end. Pironi was so close behind, I doubt he saw the pit board the first time around. Little did that matter as Gilles cocked up one turn and got on the grass. Pironi was able to slip by without resistance from Gilles.
What I am going to say now I have reflected on for many years. It is at times difficult for those of us that were there to revisit the time, but in fact Gilles and Didier were good friends. Didier had even covered for Gilles. There is talk about a lack of invitation to Didiers wedding. There had been an invitation, but the social life with Gilles was complicated. He felt he had to decline. There is a lot to be seen if you look closely at the Imola race linked here to this story. Keep an open eye and an open mind. Time, the media and those that were not there at all have kept, in my mind, the tainted memory alive. To feel Didier deliberately betrayed Gilles is to believe what those in the media have stated in their stories. There is no question there was a lot of bad feelings at Imola and shortly thereafter. The media jumped on it and created the drama we still believe today. If you have ever seen the images of Didier at Zolder carrying Gilles helmet you can see it in his face. He had lost a friend. A lot of Gilles anger was aimed at the team. He expected the team to back him up. It was very emotional and Gilles could be an emotional guy. Look at the video. When Gilles got into the lead after Rene had his engine blow, he naturally inherited the lead with Didier in tow. A few short laps later he went off the circuit himself after making a mistake. It opened the door for Didier to pass without resistance. Didier was now in the lead and according to Gilles himself, the Ferrari in the lead of a race should not be challenged by his teammate lest they take out both cars. Gilles was pissed off with himself and took off after Didier. Didier had the Slow signal from the pits hung out for him. They needed to conserve fuel. Gilles was faster on this day and got past Didier, contrary to the rules he followed himself! Had he not exercised this set of rules with Jody in 1979? Did Didier slow down while he was in the lead to conserve fuel? Possibly, but Gilles retook the lead from him. Did Didier think Gilles was just wanting to give the fans a show. It has been written by so many scribes that this is what Gilles believed when Didier passed him after he slowed as the pit board directed. I am surprised that either one of these fine drivers would have had much chance to read the pit signal at 150mph while trying to decide which side the other red car was going to attack from. Again, look at the video of this race and decide for yourself. Having known both men and observed them both closely through my lens, I doubt there was any deliberate action taken, yet the media and fans alike have crucified Didier Pironi to this day after one of the greatest displays of driving we have ever seen by two men who actually liked each other. They were certainly different. Didier was an aristocrat. Gilles was a country-bumpkin with enormous talent and a drive to be faster, yet they shared a passion for winning. What kind of racing driver would they be if they were not. I think the racing community and the media in particular owe the memory of Didier Pironi a sincere apology.
We know how this race ended and how it appeared on the podium. We also know what the media has said about this event. I wonder how many of them actually saw the race or at least the video of it. So many of the stories differ it is at times hard to believe it is the same event. Zolder will bring more of this speculation.
