Grassely Bill to Expand Bio Diesel Production
On June 24th, 2011 Senator Chuck Grassely of Iowa and Maria Cantwell of Washington put forward legislation to simplify and extend the current tax incentives for the production of domestically made Bio-Diesel. This will help producers to more easily understand how to acquire capital and the ability to expand their production. This bipartisan bill is designed to help displace imported petroleum diesel for a lower carbon emitting bio diesel.
The bill is designed to offer predictability to investors as well as producers so they can more confidently produce and invest more securely in the expanding alternate fuel market. The writers of the bill believe that raising fuel prices are holding the economy and this allows for more American producers to allow for a homegrown alternative to petroleum.
By 2015 analysts project that domestic Bio-Diesel production will replace 1.9 Billion gallons of imported diesel and create 74,000 domestic jobs to help strengthen the US Economy. This bill will increase incentives and also make it harder for petroleum producers to take advantage of lax standards to qualify for the tax credit by only mixing small amounts of bio-diesel into their blends.
Bills like this will help strengthen the quality of Bio-Diesel in the United States and hopefully engine designers will respond with engines designed to run in higher and higer blends of Bio-Diesel until ultimately they are running on a B100 blend produced domestically to help increase national security and national energy dependence.

Chevrolet Donates 24 Express Vans to Habitat for Humanity
Two dozen Express vans donated by Chevrolet to Habitat for Humanity depart Atlanta today en route to storm-ravaged New York and New Jersey, where the vans and scores of tools donated by Lowe’s and the Robert Bosch Tool Co. will be put to work helping communities recover from Hurricane Sandy.
The vans are the latest contribution by Chevrolet, General Motors and the GM Foundation to Sandy relief efforts that now total more than $2.8 million.
“As the initial reports of Sandys devastation recede from the headlines, now the hard work of recovery begins to help affected communities and people get back on their feet,” said GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “The Chevy Express vans are the just the right vehicles to carry the people and tools to get the job done."
On October 30, GM announced the donation of 30 Express cargo vans, five Express passenger vans, five Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid SUVs and 10 Chevrolet Traverse crossovers to the American Red Cross.

How to fix a scratch on your car
Prepare the surface: clean the scratched area with soap and water, and dry it completely with a clean, dry cloth.
Sand and reduce the scratch: Spray water on the repair area and over a very fine abrasive sand paper (3000 grit). Gently sand the area of the scratch by hand with light–to–medium pressure. While sanding, a light foam will appear, indicating the abrasive is reducing the scratch. Wipe the sanded area to be sure the scratch has been removed. The area being sanded will look dull, but don’t worry because the gloss will be restored in the next steps.
Compound and refine the scratch: Use a quarter–sized amount of a rubbing compound onto a compound pad and continue to buff until the clear coat’s shine is partially restored. Remove any remaining rubbing compound from the area with a clean, dry cloth before moving on to the next step.
Polish and restore shine: Onto a polishing pad, place a quarter–sized amount of scratch remover. Polish the area until the shine is fully restored.
Protect it: For added protection, apply automotive wax to the area, or even the entire vehicle.
To make things easy, there are kits like 3M’s Scratch Removal System from automotive specialty stores. These types of kits have all the pads, product, and abrasives you’ll need and are used in conjunction with a household drill, making the buffing and polishing stages even more effective than when it’s done by hand.

Report C8 to go Radical with Mid Mounted V6 Corvette C7
A couple of weeks ago, we told you about General Motors plans for the new Corvette, dubbed C7, that will hit the market by 2012. Now, Autoweek is bringing news on the for the next major model change, the C8, thats expected to be released after 2016.
"That [the C7] will be the last of the traditional, old-style Corvettes," said an unnamed senior GM insider to AutoWeek.
The C8, which would have been the C7 if GM hadnt entered bankruptcy last year, is said to ditch the Corvettes trademark front-mounted, large-displacement V8 setup that has been used in all six generations (though the C1 was also offered with a six-cylinder unit) for a mid-engine layout with a turbocharged V6 powertrain.
The report adds that the C8 will also boast a lightweight alloy body and a more compact footprint.
The question we pose here is this: if the report turns out to be true, and taking into consideration the introduction of the new Camaro with its old-school muscle car charm, is GMs move to turn the page on the Corvette in the right direction?

Dodge Adds Charger AWD Sport to the Family
When you think of the Dodge Charger. what comes to mind? A big, modern muscle car perfect for families? Visions of smokey burnouts once the kids are dropped off at school? How about a perfect all-weather car? No? Well, Dodge wants that perception to change. While the general perception of the Charger is all about aggressive styling and available HEMI V-8 power, the Charger has been available with all-wheel drive, but this feature seems to have flown under the radar. What better way to highlight the Chargers all-weather capabilities than to come out with a special model all about all-wheel drive?
Orders are being taken now, but expect January 2013 availability for the Dodge Charger AWD Sport. Consider the AWD Sport as a limited edition option package, as Dodge only intends to build Charger AWD Sports for about three months. The AWD Sport is based on the V-6 Charger SXT and HEMI V-8 Charger R/T trims. As for cost, Dodge is charging $1,395USD for the AWD Sport package, and $1,195 on R/T models.
So, what do you get for the money? The Charger AWD Sport distinguishes itself with a gloss black grille, gloss black painted 19 alloys, and a rear spoiler. Inside, buyers are also treated to sport seats and Chryslers premium Beats Audio. The V-6 Charger AWD Sport gets a slight boost in power. The well-received 3.6L V-6 now boasts 300hp, thanks to a sport tuned dual exhaust and cold air induction system. The 370hp 5.7L V-8 is unchanged. The Garage sampled a 2012 Dodge Charger R/T which we thoroughly enjoyed. For 2013, both V-6 and V-8 Chargers feature an 8-speed automatic, as opposed to the 5-speed in our test car. Unique to the AWD Sport are paddle shifters and a Sport mode that will bang out quicker shifts and will hold revs higher in each gear. Kudos to Dodge for the shift paddles made from diecast metal instead of plastic. No word from Dodge, but I expect this to be available in other Chargers once the AWD Sport run is over.
But again, the emphasis here is on the Chargers all-wheel drive capability, and to break the perception this is strictly a rear wheel drive brute. Dodge is quick to point out their active transfer case and front axle disconnect technology, where the front wheels have no power unless needed to improve fuel economy. Will it work? Hard to say, but I cant blame Dodge for wanting to raise awareness that the Charger is available with all-wheel drive. Whether we see more Chargers rolling up to ski resorts in Stowe, Vermont, or Aspen, Colorado remains to be seen.

How to Recharge a Dead Battery

If your battery lasted shorter than five years, some of the reason above may have affected the lifespan of your vehicle. A dead battery has no hopes of being used again while a battery without enough power to start the engine is another thing. If your battery falls under the latter, there is still hope that you can resurrect your battery. To determine if your battery still has some hope to be used again, simply recharge it through normal vehicle operation. If you find yourself having to jump the battery again and again, it only means you have to buy a new battery. You can do so by looking for a replacement battery.

Here are some steps to help you in jumpstarting your car’s battery. A second fully-functioning vehicle is needed to make this procedure a successful one, along with a set of jumper cables. Always remember that there is a danger in doing this procedure so extreme caution must be taken:
1. Before charging the car, open the hood and inspect the battery for any signs of damage.
2. Check all the cables attached to the battery are secure and free of any signs of corrosion. If there are any loose cables tighten them. If your battery cables show signs of corrosion, loosen the clamps and clean the cables with a stiff-bristled brush.
3. Position the vehicle to be jumpstarted next to the second vehicle. Make sure the cables are close enough to connect the two vehicles together.
4. Shut off the vehicle being used to jumpstart your battery.
5. Open the hoods of the two vehicles.
6. Identify which are the positive and negative terminals on each battery.
7. One end of the red jumper cable should be attached to a positive terminal of one car while the other end should also be attached to the positive terminal of the other car.
8. Take the one end of the black jumper cable and attach it to the battery’s negative terminal. The other end of the lack jumper cable should be attached to the negative terminal of the other car’s battery. At this point, sparks will emit from the battery but fear not because this is normal.
9. Turn the engine of the charger vehicle and rev it.
10. After revving the charger vehicle for a few minutes, start the car that’s being charged. If the engine would not start, adjust the cables and make sure they are attached firmly.
11. Once the car being charged starts, it should be kept running for at least 20 to 30 minutes for the alternator to have enough time to recharge the battery.
12. After charging the failed battery for at least 20 to 30 minutes, turn off the engine.
13. Remove the jumper cables in reverse order from which you first attached them.
14. Remove the black jumper from the negative terminal of the charger vehicle.
15. Remove the black charger from the battery that was charged.
16. Remove the red jumper cable from the positive terminal on the charger vehicle.
17. Remove the other end of the red jumper cable from the positive terminal of the battery that was charged.
18. Return all cables to their designated places and organize the jumper cables used.
The process itself is tedious and extreme caution must be used to handle the operation. If you have any protective gear such as gloves and glasses, it is highly recommended that you use them. Of course, a jumpstarted battery does not last very long and the purchase of a car battery is advisable.

US South Korean Agreement Looks to Expand Trade
Reducing non-tariff barriers as well as reducing taxes is hoped to increase the number of US made vehicles to South Korea. Hopefully this new agreement can strengthen the relationship between the US and South Korean automotive sectors.
Korean President Lee Myung Bak believes that this agreement will be a force for stability in Northeast Asia.

2014 Chevy Cruze diesel unveiling expected to take Chicago Auto Show spotlight
Following an array of debuts at the 2013 North American international Auto Showlast month in Detroit, GM will unveil its 2014 Chevrolet Cruze diesel.
Little has been released about the vehicle, but analysts expect it to grab a lot of the spotlight at the show, which starts Thursday with two Press Preview days.
“It’s a big deal that Chevy is bringing a diesel vehicle to the lineup in the United States,” said Brandy Schaffels, TrueCar.com senior editor and content manager. “These tend to be higher performance cars that are giving us diesel powertrains for fuel economy and performance.
“It’s really interesting to see a diesel engine come to a mainstream consumer vehicle.”
Diesels currently represents less than 3 percent of all U.S. sales. However, some companies expect that percentage to grow to 10 percent by 2020.
Robert Bosch, a global multibillion-dollar engineering and electronics automotive leader, anticipates more than 50 light-vehicle diesel models to be announced or released by 2017 in North America, including 22 new models in 2013.
European automakers – particularly Volkswagen – have dominated the diesel market in the U.S., which has increased from 235,500 units in 2008 to 301,300 in 2012, according toEdmunds.com.
“What diesel needs is more exposure in different brands,” said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds.com senior analyst and director of pricing and industry analysis. “Chevy coming out, being a non-European car, in a volume segment with the volume car, I definitely think it can make more of an impact.”
Caldwell said Chevrolet and Volkswagen aren’t traditionally direct competitors, but with the limited amount of passenger car diesel options, that could change.
Excluding luxury vehicles, such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, VW is the only automaker to offer a strictly diesel passenger vehicle in the U.S. since 2008, when Chrysler offered a Grand Cherokee diesel, which it will once again start to offer later this year.
Diesel-powered vehicles have remained a niche market in the U.S. for decades due to consumer perception, pricing and the fuel being more expensive than standard gasoline, according to analysts. Diesels cost about $2,000 to $3,000 more on average than a standard gasoline engine.
American automakers have remained reluctant to build anything but diesel-version pickup trucks and heavy-duty vans.
But now, “clean diesels” are 30 percent more fuel-efficient, produce lower CO2 emissions and maintain a higher residual value compared to traditional gasoline engines.
“People that buy them tend to know a lot about the automotive industry,” Caldwell said. “I think for a lot of commuters, diesel makes a lot of sense.”
The Chicago Auto Show,celebrating its 105th year, is open to the public from Feb. 9-18 at the McCormick Center, 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive. Dozens of vehicles from the world’s top automakers are expected to debut during the show’s press preview days Feb. 7 and Feb. 8.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo to start at 21 500
The Veloster Turbo goes on sale this summer, and while official pricing hasnt been released, the folks at Inside Line have apparently confirmed that the car will start at $21,500 – $22,280 when you factor in the $760 destination charge. Thats $4,205 more than a base Veloster, but in addition to more power, we expect that some of the base cars optional features will be fitted as standard kit on the Turbo.
Whats really interesting, however, is Inside Lines report that the Turbo model was never even part of the original Veloster product strategy here in the United States. No big deal, because were still getting the forced-induction hatch regardless. But the real reason why this is important is it explains why the Turbo is being offered with a six-speed automatic (in addition to a six-speed manual) rather than the dual-clutch unit found in the base car. Guess that in-house dual-clutch unit cant handle the full 195 lb-ft of the Turbo.
We expect Hyundai to release official Veloster Turbo pricing closer to the cars on-sale date this summer. And if this $21,500 base MSRP stands true, then the affordable end of Americas hot hatch pool just got a lot more interesting.

NASCAR Biffle Sets the Pace and Attempts to Tame the Lady in Black
Greg Biffle has the pole for the Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
It was beginning to look like an all Hendrick front row with Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne ready to lead the field to the green flag, until Greg Biffle showed up. Jimmie Johnson had taken the provisional pole from his teammate Kasey Kahne but was worried that he had not done his best, that he had left some speed out there on the track. That speed was found by Greg Biffle as he grabbed the pole for the Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
This is what a race car driver looks forward to, showing up every weekend and having a really fast car to drive, said Biffle, the Sprint Cup Series leader. Theyre making me look good so far.
It was a pretty uneventful lap. The car just had a ton of grip it stuck to the race track really, really well. I felt like I was a little bit light down in Turns 1 and 2 I should have been a little bit quicker down there but I got a lot out of it in 3 and 4, so it was a great lap.
I feel that special season already. I certainly think that were going to be tough in competition all year, said Biffle.
Johnson seemed to know that more speed could be found just not who was going to find it.
Jimmie Johnson felt he left some speed out on the track. Greg Biffle found it.
I left a little speed out there and Greg certainly found it, Johnson said. It wouldve been nice to have a Hendrick front row. But it was a very productive day.
Jimmie Johnson is looking to get the 200th win for team owner Rick Hendrick this weekend. He has help at the front with his teammate Kasey Kahne, but Kahne is also hungry for a win. And let us not forget the 9 time fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. who has been Mr Hendricks most consistent performer all season long, and is coming into Darlington with a 6 race top 10 streak under his belt.
It certainly weighs on the team, Johnson said before Fridays practice at Darlington Raceway. Im not frustrated yet. I dont want to see opportunities slip away. I certainly want to get 200 behind us as does everyone at Hendrick Motorsports because its lingering around.
Johnson and Kahne will be starting 2nde and 3rd respectively. Dale Jr looks to have his work cut out for him if he wants to break his streak and obtain the 200th win for his team. Starting back in 24th Jr has not shown a lot of speed this weekend. Running 19th in first practice and 18th in the second, the 88 car looks like it will need a lot of adjustments on the fly to get it where he wants it to be during the race.
Ryan Newman and Kyle Busch will round out the top 5 for the start of the race.
Danica Patrick makes her return to the Sprint Cup Schedule. It seems her team owner Tony Stewart used his well known sarcastic sense of humor as he chose which track Danica would be driving at this season. However you never really learn if you take the easy road, and Danica seems up to the challenge. The experience she gains at the tougher tracks in the schedule should translate to better finishes at the easier tracks in the long run.
This is a tough place and everything they said about it is true, Patrick said between practices. This Lady in Black is very intimidating. Im just trying to get comfortable with what the car needs me to do where to brake, how heavy to brake and those kinds of things. Ive got my Darlington stripes, officially. Its all the way down the right side of the car. We got that one over with.
Ive got everything in my corner, I just need time. I just need to get comfortable. Its definitely not going to be an easy, breezy night. Like Tony (Stewart) said, Im probably going to hate him by the end of the weekend. Come the future, Im going to be glad for it.

She understands the value of why we picked this as one of the races, Stewart said. I think shes keeping the big picture in mind. I think shes doing a really good job of taking it all in stride, not letting her position on the time sheet get her down, realizing that the whole weekend is a learning experience and trying to just get at that time.
I want her just to run as many laps as possible. The more time she can spend on track, the more experience that shes going to get. So the good thing is, running both divisions, shes getting a ton of track time.
That may be true, but there is a huge difference between the Nationwide cars and the Cup cars when it comes right down to it.
When you get to about half-throttle in the Cup car, thats what a Nationwide car feels like,Jimmie Johnson said with a laugh. Theres a lot left from that point down in a Cup car. As far as tracks go, this track in my opinion has the highest sensation of speed over any other track we go to. And its due to it being so narrow. But it will be an eye-opening experience. Fortunately, shes been real fast in other cars so hopefully it doesnt affect her too much. But weve all looked at this race on her schedule and know its going to be tough for her. And it certainly will. This is not an easy race track to get around, but shes going to do it and well see how it goes.

Audi A1 and A3 get New 1 4 TSI with Cylinder Deactivation System and Up to 60 1mpg in the UK
When applied to the four-cylinder engine, the CoD system shuts down the second and third cylinders, which are reactivated as soon as the driver calls for strong acceleration by pressing hard on the gas pedal.
The 1.4-liter engine itself puts out 138hp (140PS) at 5,000 rpm and 184 lb-ft (250Nm) of torque between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm.
It allows for 0-62 mph (100km/h) acceleration times of 7.9 and 8.0 seconds in the A1 and five-door A1 Sportback equipped with S tronic transmission, and 8.3 and 8.4 seconds in the A3 and A3 Sportback models, respectively. Top speeds are 132mph (212km/h) in all cases.
At launch, Audi will offer the A1 CoD models only with the seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch automatic transmission, and the A3 CoD range exclusively with the six-speed manual gearbox, however, later in the year, both transmissions will become available on all CoD models.
The three-door A3 CoD models match the A1s number with a combined fuel economy of 60.1mpg and CO2 output at 109g/km, with the five-door Sportback marginally behind at 58.9mpg UK (49mpg US or 4.8 lt/100km) and 112g/km.

Ignition Key Refuses to Turn
First, are you sure you’re using the right key? If you own more than one automobile, then chances are you have a single key chain that houses all your car keys. A few years ago, my cousin called me up to tell me that her ignition won’t turn. I hurried over to her house only to find out, to my embarrassment and hers, that she was using her Chevy’s key for her Camry. While this mistake is pretty rare, it’s very much understandable, especially when you’re running late for something important.
If you have the right key but it won’t insert completely then inspect your key for signs of breakage. If you try turning your key when it’s not seated firmly, then it’s not going to turn. If you can’t insert the key fully, then chances are there is something inside your ignition switch that is obstructing your key’s movement. If you broke your key elsewhere then a missing tooth should stop it from turning as well. Locate a spare key and try using that instead.
Check if you have the right gear setting. As I mentioned in my previous post, most vehicles require your auto to be in Neutral or Park for it to start.
If your steering wheel is locked, then try to move the key into the On position and move your steering wheel to unlock it before starting your vehicle. Some ignitions and steering wheel columns lock in a precise manner that requires you to first “unlock” the wheel before you can start your car. If you can’t figure out how to unlock your steering wheel, consult your owner’s manual first.
If none of these steps work, then your auto problem may have something to do with how your auto is parked. Some ignitions lock up when your tires are turned a certain way or when they’re jammed against the curb. If you think this might be your problem, then follow these steps:
Step #1: Shift into the right gear. Park for automatic transmissions and Neutral for manual.
Step #2: Set the parking/hand brake. This would prevent your car from suddenly moving while you try to unlock your ignition.
Step #3: Once you’ve secured everything, give your steering wheel a hard yank. Not too hard though, because you might just end up damaging your auto’s steering mechanism. Give it a firm yank in the opposite direction of where your wheels are turned. This should also free up a locked steering wheel.
Step #4: Release or disengage your hand brake and try turning your steering wheel. If your steering wheel turns easily, then you’ve got the green light to try starting your car again.
Step #5: Try turning your ignition key.
