Volvo V40 R Design

- Volvo V40 R-Design, 2013
Launched in stunning Rebel Blue, the new Volvo V40 R-Design is a perfect match for those who want a head-turner that radiates a truly stylish and dynamic look. The visual promise of a life in the fast lane is confirmed by the driver-centric interior and an intense, agile driving experience with performance up to 254 horsepower.
The attention-grabbing exterior has been specially developed for buyers who want to put their very own stamp on their car.
The unique R-Design front features a silk-metal framed high-gloss grille. The sporty stance is further enhanced with an ironstone diffuser, silk-metal finished details and twin exhaust tailpipes. The five-spoke diamond-cut wheels (17" or 18") complete the stylish, dynamic look.
On top of the Rebel Blue livery, the Volvo V40 R-Design buyer has a choice of six other exterior colours.
New generation R-Design interior with blue interactive dashboard
The interactive dash board in the all-new V40 has already got a lot of positive attention, both from media and customers. The possibility to switch between three layouts with different configuration and functionality - Elegance, Eco and Performance - is mirrored in the Volvo V40 R-design. But here all of the modes come in the same radiant blue colour.
The seats feature a blend of black Nubuck textile and perforated leather, crowned by an embroidered R-design logo with a blue "R". Full leather seats are available as an option.
The comfortable, in-command driver environment also includes a specially designed steering wheel, gear shifter, handbrake and sport pedals. The unique R-Design aura is enhanced by a combination of new aluminium inlays with a perforated look, black leather, matching stitching and a black headliner.
Sporty drive with a wide range of engines
R-Design can be combined with all engines available for the all-new Volvo V40, from the D2 diesel with 115 horsepower and CO2 emissions at 94 g/km (3.6 l/100 km) to the high-performance T5 petrol turbo with 254 horsepower.
Lower and firmer Sport chassis
The chassis has been developed in cooperation with Swedish racing driver Robert Dahlgren in the Volvo Polestar Black R team.
The optional Sport chassis is lowered 10 mm compared with the Dynamic chassis. Springs and shock absorbers have a firmer setting, resulting in responsive driving pleasure with full control. The front McPherson struts have 25 mm piston rods. The stiffness enables the structure to absorb lateral loads better.
At the rear the V40 has monotube dampers, featuring compression and return damping via the same valve. This gives shorter, faster fluid flow, which in turn means that the damper responds more quickly. Anti-roll bars with increased diameter also contribute to the sporty drive.
The standard Dynamic chassis rigid body and low centre of gravity also promote an alert, quick-responding character that focuses on the driving experience, yet without compromising ride comfort.
Driver orientated appeal attracts younger buyers too
The new Volvo V40 R-Design will be available in all markets that sell the Volvo V40. Volvo Car Corporation expects that around 10 percent of all V40 buyers will choose the R-Design version.

2012 Volvo V60 Plug in Hybrid

If you’ve been on the hunt for a vehicle with great gas mileage, you’re likely familiar with the fuel-sipping hybrid and diesel powerplants that will give you the most miles per gallon. Now, Volvo plans to combine both elements with the introduction of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid next week at the Geneva Motor Show. “The V60 Plug-In Hybrid is billed as the worlds first diesel plug-in hybrid, packing a 2.4-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel coupled with a 70-hp electric motor on the rear axle,” says Autoblog. “The hybrid diesel wagon enables the driver to select from one of three modes of propulsion: Pure for electric drive, Hybrid for alternating propulsion and Power for an extra boost from both.”

Volvo’s No Compromise ethos follows in the car’s specifications. Up front there’s a 2.4 liter, five-cylinder diesel engine married to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Producing 215 horsepower, it is supplemented by a 7 kilowatt electric motor, which enables the V60 Plug-in Hybrid to enter all-electric all-wheel drive mode when required.
Driving the rear wheels is a 50 kilowatt peak electric motor, making the V60 Plug-in Hybrid Wagon a through-the-road hybrid. Combined, the entire drivetrain system can produce an impressive 472 foot-pounds of torque, and, in power mode, accelerate the car from 0-62 mph in just 6.2 seconds.
All that torque comes in handy for towing too: Volvo claims the V60 Plug-in Hybrid Wagon can easily tow up to 1.9 tons, although fuel economy won’t be anywhere near the headline-grabbing 1.9 l/100km (124 mpg) it has achieved on the European test cycle.

This Volvo V60 will be priced lightly higher than a standard version, but the saving in fuel economy may outweigh the initial costs. In order to make the car as efficient as possible, Volvo has included a 2.4-liter inline 5-cylinder diesel motor that powers the front wheels of the car. This engine can produce 215hp and 440Nm of torque, giving the small car plenty of power. The major difference comes in the rear end, where an Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) unit gives power to the rear wheels. An electric motor that makes 70hp is given its charge by a 12kWh lithium-ion battery pack. These two systems together combine to make 285hp and 660Nm of torque and a rather quick hybrid acceleration of 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds.

In typical Volvo fashion, safety is a paramount concern. Many people in the industry are concerned about how large battery packs will react after collisions and Volvo has taken it under advisement during development. The battery pack in the V60 will be completely separated from the passenger compartment and encased by extra steel beams in the frame. If the battery were to be damaged in an accident special ducts have been incorporated into the structure to lead the gases out safely under the car. Other safety features including Collision Warning, Full Auto Brake, and City Safety will be standard on the new V60 and intend to keep occupants safe in all conditions.

Review Volvo S60 T5 AWD
I would forgive you in an instant if you hadnt noticed the changes happening at the entry-level side of Volvos offerings in North America. The compact S40/V50 sedan and wagon quietly departed here two years ago, replaced with the sublime V40, which is not available here. Now comes news the two door hatch C30, which had hoped to steal sales away from the MINI Cooper but barely made a ripple here will also be exiting the stage. So, what then is the entry-level Volvo?
Well, that leaves the S60, which for many years was comfortably positioned as Volvos mid-level, bread and butter sedan, positioned above the smaller S40 and luxurious S80. The Garage reviewed a 2011 Volvo S60 T6, and we came away impressed. That was the sole S60 for 2011, but in 2012, Volvo added the S60 T5. A less powerful S60 that would ultimately wear the dubious crown of being the starter Volvo. Was any luster lost? Read on
Ive been staring at my pics of the T5 and T6, and I cannot tell any difference between the two. Apart from the T5 badge on the rear, no one will know you went with the base model. Two years on, the S60 still looks fantastic. Volvo still marches to the beat of their own drum while other competitors relentlessly chase the German marques. In place of our T6s eye searing copper paint, our T5 was finished in a soothing Ice White. All S60s come standard with 17 alloys, but our test car was equipped with an alternative, optional Kjord Design, which look far better than the stock wheels for only a little extra money. Style-wise, this is one sophisticated looking car, handsome, contemporary, and in a class of its own.
I confess, on my first encounter with the S60 the Beechwood leather seating surfaces left me cold. Second time around, I was warming up to them. Yes, it is a bold color, but without the copper exterior, it was much easier to swallow. After a 500 mile round trip from Connecticut to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I actually started to like it. The seats offer comfort that are best in class. Controls are easy to use, gauges simple and elegant to look at. I relished attention to details, such as an illuminated shift knob showing your gear. Offered a choice between an S60 or BMW 3-series for a long distance tourer, I would pick the Volvo in a heartbeat. The only downside was a smallish trunk. Were a family of three, so we could fit items in the back seat, but a larger family would find the S60 a challenge for long trips.
For the gearheads, the real question is what is the trade-off by going with the base engine? The T5 is powered by a 2.5L inline-five cylinder rated at 250hp, paired to a six-speed automatic. Thats down 50hp from the T6 we last reviewed. The T5 is offered in front or all-wheel drive. Our car was all-wheel drive, and Volvo claims a 0-60mph time of 6.6 seconds. Thats about a half second slower than the T6, while delivering 20/29 MPG city/highway mileage. Bombing down the interstate at 80mpg the S60 T5 was showing 27MPG on the trip computer. Its no scorcher, but the power is always there when you need it, and passing is done with ease. The T5 is the smoothest five cylinder car I have driven to date.
The ride quality is exceptionally comfortable. Steering is direct, with just enough feel to keep me happy. I found the handling to be confidence inspiring. Its these Connecticut-Pennsylvania trips that really tell me the story of a car, especially when my son and wife doze away, it is just the car, the road and me where I truly get a feel of the car, and in this case, the S60 was positively one of the most stand-out cars of the year. That I can point the S60 at rapid pace without disturbing my passengers as they nap is the mark of an excellent automobile.
The Volvo S60 T5 starts at $31,900USD. Our test car added all-wheel drive, the Premier Package (power moonroof, leather seating, auto dimming rearview mirror, power passenger seat, keyless entry), Climate Package (heated front seats, air quality system, heated windshield washer nozzles), rear spoiler and upgraded wheels, with an as delivered charge of $38, 178. Yes, I scoffed at the price of the car with the absence of of GPS navigation (which is available), but reminded myself the four banger BMW we reviewed cost over $50,000 which offered only a few extra bells and whistles. In that light, the Volvo is a virtual bargain.
In the world of cars, entry-level and base model often provoke fears of decontented, weakly powered cars, but with the Volvo S60 T5, that is hardly the case. Odds are, if you are a potential buyer, you have a phone with GPS. If you demand a stick shift and slightly sharper handling, the BMW is your car. But again, if long distance touring is your thing, and you prize a roomier interior and a calmer demeanor with a distinct Swedish flair without giving up anything in speed and handling composure, a look at the Volvo S60 T5 is worth a look, and will never leave you with the impression of driving a base model.

Volvo V40 Has Worlds First Pedestrian Airbag System
Swedish automaker Volvo has always been known for manufacturing some of the world’s safest vehicles. But now Volvo is looking to not just protect the passengers in the car, but the pedestrians roaming the streets.
We all know accidents happen, and try as we might to prevent them with technology – it’ll still happen because we’re human beings. Volvo is hoping when those accidents happen, they can help prevent serious injury by offering the world’s first Pedestrian Airbag System. That’s right, the poor guy or gal getting hit by a Volvo will land on a fluffy, cushy airbag rather than the hard hood or even worse, the glass windshield.
The Volvo V40, unveiled at this week’s 2012 Geneva Motor Show, will be equipped with the Pedestrian Airbag System alongside its Pedestrian Detection technology that will hopefully prevent a collision with a pedestrian in the first place.
Other automakers have tweaked the design of their hoods to soften the blow of a pedestrian collision, but the Volvo system will detect a vehicle-to-pedestrian accident and respond similar to a vehicle-to-vehicle collision. The system sensors will trigger the section of the hood closest to the windshield to pop up slightly and a U-shaped airbag will deploy from underneath, forming a cushion around the base and sides of the windshield and A-pillars.
Hopefully there aren’t any accidental deployments of the Pedestrian Airbag System – like say, hitting a rock on the freeway while traveling 65-mph. That wouldn’t be good at all.

Volvo XC70 Surf Rescue Concept Review

It is normal for the SEMA concept car from Volvo focuses on safety. It was a natural choice. However, 2007 marks the first year that Volvo has built a SEMA vehicle with a specific area of security: enter the Volvo XC70 Surf Rescue (SR). Inspired by the surf rescue vehicles up and down the coast of Southern California, SR XC70 Volvo embody the core values of privacy in a bold and exciting that will make world debut at this years show Special Equipment Association of the market.
As with every SEMA concept from Volvo, all equipment in the safety standards XC70 SR intact and functioning. The Volvo XC70 is all new 2008 and incorporates the cutting edge passive and preventive safety systems.
"We developed the all new XC70 with a goal that should be the safest vehicles in its segment," says Ingrid Skogsmo, director of Volvo Cars Safety Center. "XC70 models from the same sophisticated network of interacting safety systems as an all-new Volvo S80. Patented body structure absorbs energy in a very effective. And the system of internal security, including the latest generation of side airbags and protection of cervical whip. Next, we present a global innovation in the field of child safety. "
In a true demonstration of the flexibility of the family / adventure XC70, Volvo combines height-adjustable built-in booster cushion - a world first - with an extended inflatable curtain to provide industry best security system for precious cargo in the rear passenger.
Safety innovation does not stop there. Update the latest technology including a new structure for the stronger party to optimize side impact protection, not only for children but for all residents. Face the entire body structure is both stronger and lighter thanks to a balanced combination of high strength steels of different qualities.
In addition, a new type of side airbag - first seen in the all-new S80 model - refines Volvos patented SIPS (Security protection against side impact) in a more effective security system. The new side airbags have two separate rooms, one for the hips and the other to the chest. Since the hips can withstand greater force than the chest, lower chamber pressure is increased in up to five times the top. The curtain side airbags interact with the rubber and the network of safety beams to provide institutions the most effective protection.
Volvo system for avoiding neck injuries - whip (Whiplash Protection System) - is one of the best on the market. In the case of rear collision, the front passenger seat that came with the initial body movement and dampens the incoming force rather like a hand does when catching a ball. All new XC70 features the next generation of whip mechanism, developed to ensure that the gentle damping motion and provide good contact between the head and head restraint throughout the impact sequence.
With high ground clearance of the new XC70, there are relatively high-placed bumpers can create an increased risk of damage to the vehicle passengers along with lower positioned bumpers. To reduce the risk of injury in a collision, the front suspension sub-frame is equipped with a cross placed on the lower bumper height of a conventional car. This lower beam is integrated into the structure of the XC70 and carefully hidden behind the spoiler. In a collision, the rail is designed to attack the protective structure of the car approaching, which activate the crumple zone as intended so that residents can be given the highest protection level.

Protection for pedestrians and cyclists have also been developed in the new XC70. Home has been given energy-absorbing properties, at least with the structure of generously dimensioned soft in the front bumper that helps reduce the risk of leg injury. In addition, the lower edge of the wing has been reinforced and moved forward, almost equivalent to the bumper. The aim is that the contact area to pedestrians or cyclists should be spread over a larger area, thus contributing to reduce the risk of injury. The lines are raised and the closing down of the honeycomb structure distributes the load in terms of impact, helping to absorb energy and reduce the risk of injury.
Better protect drivers and passengers in the new XC70 is a telescopic steering column, which, during deformation, moves horizontally for best integration with the airbag, the pedals are functional limit the risk of penetration into the passenger compartment airbags feature two-step, seat belt pre-tensioner and belt reminders for all five seats, belt force limiting for front seat, reinforced, transverse beam pipe installed between the A-posts; strong SIPS tubes in a chair and a sturdy magnesium bracket in the middle of vehicles equipped with diagonal steel beams in ultra-high doors, and, like all Volvo cars, the engine, transversely mounted compact.
"The best way to protect occupants of vehicles to avoid accidents," said Skogsmo "Thats why weve developed a number of advanced driving and support systems that interact intelligently to assist the driver in the circumstances. Difficult, but do not drive yourself or take responsibility for progress. Our task is to help drivers make the right decision, he was alert and in a variety of ways that show how the best way to get out the situation. "

To help drivers keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front, Volvo has developed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). This system should primarily be regarded as a function of convenience, but also to contribute to a more controlled progress if the speed of movement is uneven.
This technology is also used as the basis for some of Volvos advanced driving and support systems. Using radar sensors, adaptive cruise control continues to monitor the gap to the vehicle ahead and automatically adjusts vehicle speed to ensure that this gap is not reduced too much. The driver activates the cruise control by setting a desired speed between 18 and 124 mph, then selecting the minimum time interval to the vehicle in front. There are five gaps from time to choose between the different.
The rear-end collisions are a common type of accident. In many cases, the reason is that drivers distracted and failed to respond in time. In this context, Volvo has developed a system called Collision Warning with Brake Assist. Area in front of the vehicle is continuously monitored with the aid of radar sensors. If the all-new XC70 approaches another vehicle from behind and the driver does not react, a red flashing warning lights on the windshield. At the same time, the sound of a bell. In some situations, this is enough for drivers to react and take action to avoid danger.

If the risk of collision increases despite the warning, brake assist system is activated. To shorten the reaction time the brakes are prepared for the action of the automatic application of pads against the discs. In addition, the hydraulic brake pressure is amplified produces a good braking effect even if the driver does not hit particularly hard on the brake pedal.
"If the road is not too high speed, brake assist helps reduce the consequences of a collision," said Skogsmo. "However, the reaction is always an important driver for the result."
To help drivers maintain better control over the driving situation, the new XC70 is equipped with a blis (Blind Spot Information System). Using cameras integrated into door mirrors, blis registers whether another vehicle in the blind spot offset to the rear. If there is a car there, the light illuminating the relevant mirror to alert drivers and improve his chances to take the right decision.
All new XC70 has a highly advanced braking with a number of functions that interact to provide the shortest possible braking in all conditions. They include Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), a new generation of Volvos emergency braking support, whether using a vacuum and hydraulic capacity to help the engine brake in the shortest possible distance in a panic situation, Optimized Hydraulic Brakes (OHB) to assist in braking deceleration in the compensation for low pressure in the brake vacuum servo brake warning Ready (RAB) can predict rapid braking and apply the brake pads against the discs even before the pilot is able to push the brake pedal, and Fading Brake Support (FBS), which uses hydraulics to gradually build up braking pressure hard length during braking, thus helping to reduce the risk of fading and maintain pedal feel.
To help the best possible visibility when driving at night on the road and the bend of the curve, the new XC70 can be equipped with Active Bi-Xenon - The following lights sweep around and bend in the road. A mini-processor is used to calculate and analyze a number of parameters and optimize the beam depending on the situation. Lamp can swivel up to 15 degrees in each direction. To save wear on the system, it is automatically disabled in daylight conditions.
In a world increasingly precarious control is important, even when the vehicle is parked. As a matter of protection against theft and avoid situations that may involve personal risk, Volvo Personal Car Communicator Communicator (PCC) to provide information for safety and security. This pocket-forward control center can tell the owner if the vehicle is locked or not, and if the alarm is triggered. If the alarm has been triggered, the CPC will indicate if a person in the vehicle via the heartbeat sensor and a highly sensitive process of computing progress.
Promote safety, the new XC70 can be specified with laminated glass in all windows, including rear side windows and tailgate, making the robbery more difficult. This means that the trunk also get effective protection. Storage system at the rear under the trunk floor has a capacity of more than 1.62 cubic meters (without a spare tire), and is now locked. Locked automatically and easily when the tub is closed and locked.
All-new XC70 packages both security and convenience with an optional motorized tailgate. With the push of a button on the remote control, full access to the storage area occurs courtesy of the vehicle hydraulics. To reduce the risk of accidents destroy the hand or fingers, closed the panel in the tub itself. In addition, security features dual-stage integrated into the tailgate, which involves a cast on each side of the pinch protection and emergency stop. Hydraulic system is equipped with a force sensor, stopping immediately if it detects obstacles during operation.
