Absent since 2001 a historic Jeep nameplate returns for 2014.

Today, Jeep announced that the former Jeep Liberty will be replaced with the return of the  Cherokee for 2014.  The new Cherokee will be a stark divergence from its truck-like predecessor. While this might bemoan some Jeep enthusiasts it offers a consolation prize that might just make up for its lack of boxiness. That prize is a 45 percent increase in fuel economy compared to the outgoing midsize SUV.

More details on the Jeep Cherokee will become available at the press preview for the New York Auto Show on March 27.

What do you think? Is this too radical or is it something Jeep owners will latch onto? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter at @talipa2012.
